Spring Branch Raw Milk Co-op
We are a group of northwest Houston residents who banded together to get access to fresh raw milk from A2 Jersey cows while minimizing the effort. We order every 2 weeks and co-op members take turns driving to the dairy in Schulenberg to pick up the order. We drop the milk at a central drop point in Spring Branch. By sharing driving responsibilities, we only have to drive to the dairy (about 90 minutes one way) every few months). Here’s how it works:
- There is no cost to join. You earn your membership by taking turns driving to the dairy. The frequency of driving varies with the number of members, but every 3-4 months on average.
- If you do not have 2 large ice chests, you can use the groups’ ice chests that stay at the milk drop-off point.
- We use a Facebook Messenger chat group to communicate with each other.
- We use Google Sheets (no Google login required) to create our orders of gallons and 1/2 gallons of raw milk as well as dairy products such as cheeses, sour cream, pastured eggs, etc. See the full list of raw milk products from the Schulenberg dairy. Note our prices we have arranged with the dairy are slightly lower, such as a gallon of raw milk is $6, not $7.50. Our prices are posted on our Google Sheet that we share with you once join our group (for free).
- We use Paypal to pay each other (no fees, we use “paying a friend” option).
- The usual timeline for an order:
- By Sunday evening, each member places their order on Google Sheets (you are given the link when you join). Then you pre-pay the driver for that week using Paypal (you must have a Paypal account to participate).
- The driver drives on Mondays (you can request to drive on Sunday by Messenging in the chat group). You can go anytime of the day you want as the dairy is open 24 hours a day.
- The driver prints off 2 copies of the Google Sheet order. Then goes to the dairy.
- Using 2 large ice chests, the driver picks up the milk and other items ordered.
- The driver pays the dairy leaving a copy of the printed Google Sheet order with the payment.
- The driver drops off the orders and a copy of the Google Sheet order at a drop-off point in the central Spring Branch area and notifies everyone that milk is in via the Facebook Messenger chat.
- The members pick up their orders from the drop-off point marking off on the Google Sheet order that they picked up their order. The last member who picks up their milk empties the ice chests and props the lids open to prevent the chests from mildew and mold..
The group has an administrator that manages the Facebook group, Google Sheet order form, and helps new members get onboarded.
